To go on a date with his girlfriend, the player character, "Boyfriend," must defeat a series of characters in singing and rapping competitions.

During the game, the opponent will sing a series of notes. The player can then finish the assignment by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys, or they can customize it as they see fit. Some songs feature more complex melodies, with the player's melody sometimes deviating from the opponent's.

Each week, players in the Friday night funkin can pick from three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty level rises, the speed of the incoming arrows increases, and the arrow arrangement becomes more complicated. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and shown in the upper corner of the week selection screen.
