Rome is a city that many of us have long wanted to visit on our own, and when it comes to culture and aesthetic appeal, it is right up there with Paris. The "Eternal City" has an improbable rich history, with architectural relics dating back to the Roman Empire. The list of things to do in Rome is never-ending.

The mouth-watering gelato varieties to the traditional Roman pasta presented with such pride all represent the fact that Rome is the capital of Italy, as do the great variety of meals and delectable regional delicacies served across the city.

Safe for women?

Rome's exciting nightlife and pleasant evenings may have you out till the wee hours exploring charming alleyways and trying local food. Fortunately, if you're travelling alone to Rome, you won't have to worry about making your way home at night. There will probably always be people nearby because Rome is busy all the time. So your list of things to do in Rome is still valid if you are a solo female traveller.

Where to stay?

Rome is so well-liked that the city has so many hotels that you'll get a headache from it. There is no "optimal" neighbourhood to stay in; rather, you should base your selection of a place to stay mostly on your preferences and mode of transportation.

The main transportation hub, Termini Station, provides the most selection; there are many hostels and pensions here, and the location is unequalled for access to trains and buses. Nevertheless, you will be distant from many of the sights and the area around Vatican City.

What to see

When it comes to cuisine, romance, history, and culture, Rome is THE place to go. In my three-day plan for Rome, I've included some of my favourite attractions and must-sees, but when in Rome, be sure to see these highlights!

The world's first "multilevel retail mall" was Trajan's Markets. The Via Biberatica, the city's best-preserved ancient street, is also accessible from here. Afterwards, ascend Palatine Hill to view the imperial residences, large garden areas, and villa remains.

Where to eat

Experiencing Rome's food is a must for every visit there! Visit a neighbourhood market for some locally produced fresh food. The Campo de' Fiori Market is a vibrant market with treats like freshly picked fruit, hand-squeezed olive oil, and Limoncello. You may try a variety of wines, cheeses, liqueurs, balsamic vinegar, liquors, and olive oils here. Of course, you should also visit a typical Roman pizzeria. When it comes to making fresh pizza, wood-burning stoves are truly magical! Look for an establishment that will give you a brief tutorial on how to make your pies in the Napoli manner; it's educational and delicious, and you get to participate in the joy of stretching the dough.

Bonus

Rome is a fairly secure city, although it does see its fair share of pickpocketing and tourist frauds. Maintain a low profile, carry your luggage close to your body, and hide your cash and credit cards.

The first tip is to always keep your valuables close by and in a front pocket or purse.
