How to Book Speaking Engagements for Marketing

Putting oneself out there and dealing with the public is the most difficult part for most authors.

Here are some ways to make it a little simpler by legacy book publishing.

Dress Comfortably:

Choose fabrics that breathe, shoes that allow you to be on your feet without pain, and layered clothing to compensate for temperature differences in the space, whatever your preference.

Nourish Yourself:

Before an author's lecture, don't consume a lot of food. Eat light yet nutritious foods, such as raw nuts or a protein bar to munch on during a break.

Plan Your Introduction:

Discuss how you'd like to be introduced to the person who will be introducing you. Don't be afraid to ask if they'd prefer a written introduction or if you could give a few highlights from your author bio that they may include in their own.

Don’t Over Prepare:

Know what you want to say, and only use your notes if necessary. You may return to something you may have missed or remedy a mistake as long as you're in the moment engaging with people on a human level. Being present and engaged is crucial.

Take Your Time:

Don't make a hasty decision. If you're short on time, it's best to omit a few details and finish gracefully.

Sell Books:

Speaking promotes the sale of books. There are "Back of the Room" sales, in which you bring copies of your book to a speaking event, request that a table be set up, and then sell and autograph them on-site after your speech. When audience members seek out your book after the event, it generates post-event sales via online retailers and local bookshops.
