Check if Your Pool Light Bulb is Replaceable

Different types of pool lights vary greatly from one company to another. While some pool lights have replaceable light bulbs, others do not. Currently, the most common standards for replaceable pool light bulbs are PAR56 and E27. For more information on pool light bulbs, you can refer to the comprehensive guide titled "LED Pool Light Bulbs: A Complete Guide." Additionally, you can consult your retailer or pool light manufacturer for advice.

Preparation

Before replacing the pool light bulb, it is important to be fully prepared to avoid any rushing or mishaps. Gather the necessary tools: a screwdriver, tester, and replacement light bulb.

Drain Water (Optional)

Draining a portion of the pool water can make the replacement work easier, especially for beginners, although it is not necessary.

Turn Off the Power

Once you have drained the water, locate the pool power switch, which is usually found in the power distribution box. Turn off the power to the pool. To ensure that the power is truly off, try turning on the pool light again. If you are unable to locate the pool power switch, it is safest to turn off the main power in your home. Repeat the above steps to confirm that the power is off.

Remove the Pool Light

If you have an inground pool light, there will be a reserved light wire in the pool light niche. At this stage, unscrew the pool light and carefully extract it. Then, bring the light down to the ground for the next steps. If your pool light is wall-mounted, loosen the wire on the opposite end after loosening the pool light slightly. Slowly pull the wire that was just drawn out and then bring it down to the ground.

Replace the Pool Light Bulb

The next step is to secure the screws. Some screws on the lamp holder are cross-shaped, while others are in line. Therefore, make sure you have all possible tools within reach to avoid wasting time. Take a suitable screwdriver, remove the screws from the lamp holder, place them in a safe location, detach the lamp holder, and keep the screws together.

Some light bulbs have screw connectors that can be twisted and unscrewed, while others have attached wires. Be cautious when removing the light bulb. When a wire is exposed, test it with a tester to determine if it is live. Once confirmed safe, replace it with a new light bulb.

If the bulb appears dirty, clean it. Pool lights that have been in use for more than ten years may have internal water corrosion. If the corrosion is severe, even after replacing the pool light bulb, it may deteriorate within a short period. In such cases, it is best to replace the pool light with a brand new one.

Reinstall the Pool Light

After replacing the bulb, reinstall the inner collar of the lens one by one. Then place the lamp housing and tighten the screws again. For inground pool lights, wrap the wire in circles, place it back into the cavity, secure it, and tighten it. For wall-mounted pool lights, you will also need to go to the other side of the wire after installing the light. Slowly pull in the wire that was just pulled out and connect it to the power supply, securing the connection with electrical tape.

Organize your tools to avoid mistakenly kicking or blowing them into the pool, which can pose safety hazards.

Once you have completed all the steps, turn the power back on and check if the pool light is functioning properly. At the same time, use a tester to check for any leaks around the pool light. If everything looks as expected, your pool light bulb replacement is complete.
